Abstract:
Co-op 32 to 38 are seven new diseaseresistant
apple selections released for
advanced testing by Purdue Univer
sity, Rutgers University, and the Uni
versity of Illinois as part of a coopera
tive apple breeding program.
This is
the seventh series of such releases
since 1967. All seven selections derive
a high level of field resistance (essen
tially field immunity) to apple scab
caused by Venturia inaequalis (derived
from Malus floribunda 821) and vary
ing resistances to powdery mildew
caused by Podospnaera leucotricha,
fire blight caused by Erwinia amylovora
and cedar apple rust caused by
Gymnnosporangium juniveri-virginianae.
Resistance to apple scab was
confirmed by repeated greenhouse
inoculations of seedlings as well as 10
years or more of field observations in
unsprayed breeding orchards; resist
ances to other diseases was determined
by repeated field observations.
