Abstract:
Procedures for screening apple selections
for selected insect and European
red mite resistance were
developed.
Among the selections
with resistance to scab (Venturia inequalis
(Cke.) Wint.) and/or powdery
mildew (Podosphaera leucotrichu
(E&E) Salm.), cedar apple rust
(Gymnosporanguim juniperi-virginanue
Schw.), apple blotch (Gloeodes
pomigenu ( Schw. ) Colby ), developed
cooperatively by the agricultural experiment
stations of Indiana, Illinois
and New Jersey, we found potential
sources of resistance.
We believe that
there are about 5 sources of resistances
to each of the following arthropod
pests of economic importance to
apples : apple maggot (Rhugoletb
pomonella (Walsh) ); codling moth
(Carpocapsa pomonella (L.)); plum
curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphur (Herbst)); red-banded leaf roller (Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker)) and European red mite (Panonychus ulmi (Walker)). More selections will be screened to find additional sources of resistance.
We wil attempt through breeding to transmit heritbale traits for insect and/or mite resistance to promising disease resistant selections with the objective of either reducing or eliminating dependency on chemical control of these pests.
