| Abstract:
Huge losses occur in storage of rainy-season onion in India due to sprouting and decay. Experiments have shown that the use of maleic hydrazide reduced losses due to sprouting, however, at higher doses decay increased. An experiment was conducted at the Associated Agricultural Development Foundation's research stations at Karnal (Haryana) and Nasik (Maharashtra) to study the effects of maleic hydrazide (MH) alone at 1 500, 2 000, 2 500 ppm and in combination with captafol @ 0.2% and carbendazim @ 0.1%. MH @ 2 500 ppm gave significantly lower sprouting and total loss both at Karnal and Nasik. Although there were no significant differences in decay at either location, application of MH in combination with fungicides, i.e., MH @ 2 000 ppm + carbendazim @ 0.1% resulted in less sprouting and decay at Nasik. At Karnal, however, no such trend in losses due to decay, which may be on account of bacterial infection against which fungicides have no effect, was observed. | |
