Abstract: Pleurotus is one of the major genera in Agarics. Species in this genus are widely distributed throughout the world and they are distinguished by both micro- and macroscopic characters as described by Singer (1962). Sawada in 1959 recorded two species, P. limpidus and P. ostreatus, which he found in forest regions in Taiwan. P. ostreatus is a well known edible fungus widely cultivated in Europe, Japan and China. An edible species of Pleurotus was found in Taiwan in warm seasons. The name "abalone mushroom" is given to the fungus because the texture of cooked mushroom is similar to that of abalone. Cultivation of the abalone mushroom has developed into a new mushroom industry in Taiwan. In examination of the fruit body of this mushroom, we found that it differs from P. ostreatus. It is somewhat similar but not identical to P. corticatus and P. cystidiosus described by Kaufert (1935, 1936) and Miller (1969), respectively. This paper deals with some characteristics and methods of cultivation of this mushroom.
