Volume 9 Part 1 Article 67
Year 1976
Title: Cultivation of Straw Mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) Using Different Substrates in Multi-Tiered Racks
Author: S.E. Chua

Abstract:

The straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) is normally cultivated using padi straw as substrate. San Antonio and Fordyce, Jr. (1972) reported that straw mushroom could be grown on the type of compost commonly used to produce button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus (LANGE) SING.). Chung and Chang (1972) showed that a mixture of cotton waste and padi straw could be used to culture the straw mushroom. Chua and Ho (1973) showed that banana leaves and also spawn medium consisting of oat chaff, oat husk, sawdust, rice bran, and sucrose could be used as substrates for the culture of straw mushroom.

Since Singapore is not a rice growing country and thus padi straw is not easily available, this trial is a preliminary trial to study whether straw mushroom can be cultivated using substrates other than padi straw. It is hoped that the present investigation may indicate the feasibility or otherwise of growing this mushroom on a commercial scale. To intensify production, the cultivation is done in multi-tiered racks.
