Abstract: Volvariella volvacea (BULL. ex. FR.) SING, is a Basidiomycete. Its cytology (Chang, 1969; Chang and Ling, 1970; Chang and Yau, 1971) and fine structure (Chang and Tanaka, 1971; Tanaka and Chang, 1972) have recently been reported. Unlike many other Basidiomycetes, both monosporous and heterokaryotic hyphae of this species are multinucleate and there are no clamp connections on the latter. Since the basidium is the site of karyogramy, meiotic division, basidiospore formation, and basidiospore discharge, the initiation and development of a basidia have been treated as biologically significant features of most Basidiomycetes (Chang and Chu, 1969; Ehrlich and McDonough, 1949; Prince, 1943; Wells, 1964a, b; Wilson et al., 1967). Studies have also been made on the fine structure of some basidia (Lu, 1967; Manocha, 1965; Setliff et al., 1972; Thielke, 1968; Volz et al., 1968; Wells, 1965). The purpose of this study is to report the light and electron microscopical features of the initiation and development of basidia in V. volvacea. The presence of microbody-like structures only in fertile cells is also discussed.
