Abstract: Shii-ta-ke, Lentinus edodes (BERK.) SING., distributes in China, Korea, Taiwan, the northern parts of Thailand and Burma, Nepal, North Borneo, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea, as well as in Japan as shown in Fig. 1 (KOBAYASHI, 1966; KOBAYASHI et al, 1973; MORI, 1972; MORI et al., 1974; SAWADA, 1936; SINGER, 1961). Since 1970, our Institute has collected various native strains of L. edodes growing in Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, Nepal, etc. Some F1 hybrids hetween these native strains and Japanese cultivated strains have been obtained already. This paper reports the results of hybridization between five varieties of Japanese cultivated strains and native strains collected in Taiwan and Papua New Guinea and the results of tests on fruit-body formation and mycelial growth of the F1 hybrids thus obtained.
