Title: Response of the Cultivated Mushroom to Temperature with Particular Reference to the Control of Cropping
Author: P.B. Flegg

Abstract:

In Great Britain some mushroom growers have gained considerable economic benefit from installing cooling equipment in their spawn-running and cropping rooms. As well as being able to maintain the desired environmental conditions more accurately, they have had better control over their crops. The potential benefits to be gained from increased control of mushroom production, discussed at the 1970 MGA Conference in Jersey (Flegg, 1972), include higher income from matching farm output during the week more closely to market demand, fewer unmarketable flats after weekend and holiday periods and more efficient use of labour for picking. Control of cropping is also essential if we are to obtain the maximum benefit from picking lines and mechanical harvesting.
