Title: Farm Design in Realtion to Mushroom Picking
Author: J.C. Hopper

Abstract:

The Picking Line System is by virtue of its close correlation to all aspects of production the heart of the Mushroom Farm. I shall be speaking largely about the new farm which I have been building at Eye in Suffolk and which will be complete by the end of September. The area in question is a basic 50,000 sq ft of growing area. The whole farm I have designed specifically for the use of a picking line. It must always be remembered that the mechanization of picking being the centre of production requires an even greater understanding of all aspects of management, of all growing techniques, indeed much more so as machines are precise and men are not. High profits can be made or lost purely on the decisions which are taken by the leader of the team. A thorough understanding of the human machine is of prior importance to enable the successful working of the picking machine, for it is men who motivate and create things and it is their will and decisions which make team work; and never machines just because they are there which move men. Therefore good leadership and management is even more necessary on the highly mechanized farm owning a picking line, otherwise however good their weapons they are useless if they do not understand them, and are bound to fail in time. It is the really good manager who will score by using the combined intelligence and initiative of his staff so that the cumulative will of the team is harnessed always to better production. People will always work better when they understand why they are doing a particular job and why and how it is related to the overall success of the enterprise. Another factor to remember when managing your staff is that they are all born with aggression and this is generally used by them against their boss, the continued shop floor battle against management. The skilful manager understands this and will be able to direct and channel their aggression on to competitors, guiding the will of the team to outdo even the best competitor in producing more efficiently, taking this aggression away from themselves and putting it to good use.
