Abstract: Mixtures based on neutralized peat are widely used in the mushroom industry for casing mushroom beds. In Europe, variations occur in the type and quality of materials added to peat, e.g. sand, gravel, spent compost, and also in the type of peat used, e.g. fen peat, sphagnum peat. Irish sphagnum peat is the most widely used peat material in the United Kingdom and in Ireland. Lump chalk is the traditional neutralizing agent, but in recent years materials such as ground limestone, hydrated lime and limestone grit have been commonly used. A series of experiments at the Irish Agricultural Institute's Mushroom Research Unit compared the effect of various peat based casing mixtures on yield. From these experiments a casing technique - 'spawned casing' - was developed. Further experiments studied the effects of this technique when applied at usual casing time and at spawning.
