Abstract: Cytotaxonomy is developing as a prominent area in plant systematics, but so far it has not been used in taxonomy of higher fungi. Chromosomes of Collybia maculata var. scorzonerea have been studied; they are sufficiently distinct to permit an accurate analysis of karyotype. Similar studies might indicate phylogenetic relationships in other fungi, especially in groups where other phenotypic characteristics do not allow a clear definition of species.
