Abstract: Population levels of aerobic bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi have been studied in experiments designed to evaluate the function of the soluble carbohydrate fraction in mixtures of wheat straw and horse manure undergoing composting for mushroom production. Differences between the microbiology of different experimental composts can be associated with some chemical components analysed and also nutritional status as shown by cropping performance. The composition of the microfloras from experimental composts are detailed and considered in relation to their function in composting.
