Abstract: There are good reasons to suppose that the Shiitake originates from Amami Island, and that the present varieties have locally developed from this common stock. The fact that closely allied varieties occur in geographically distant areas not associated by connecting normal winds may be explained by the influence of typhoons. An example is given as an illustration. The existence of varieties adapted to spring, summer and autumn is very important from an economic standpoint, as they make production possible throughout the year (except in winter).
