Title: Experiments with Soil Disinfectants for Casing Material and Their Effect on Yield
Authors: K. Bech and C. Riber Rasmussen

Abstract:

Experiments were carried out in which the untreated Danish standard casing (a mixture of sphagnum peat, coarse sand and calcium carbonate) was compared with casings treated with steam, formaldehyde, Vapam, chloropicrin and Basamid. These treatments are discussed. The experiments were carried out at the Research Station in Copenhagen in co-operation with three leading farms. The main purpose was to find out whether there would be any injurious effect on yield. The results show that none of the soil disinfectants tested caused reduction, very high yields were obtained. Generally speaking there was no difference in yield between the Research Station and the three commercial farms.

The spreading of the parasitic fungus Mycogone is discussed. The gradual decrease of the infection from its original starting point is shown in a diagram.
