Volume 6 Part 1 Article 34
Year 1967
Title: Cultural Techniques for Tray Grown Mushrooms in Glasshouses
Author: P.G. Allen

Abstract:

Each autumn and winter, starting in 1961, a number of glasshouse compartments were devoted to this work. Comparisons (after casing) were made of three levels of temperature, three spawning methods, three rates of spawning and two depths of bed. Results show that the best economic return is obtained from a combination of 60°F, through spawning at the rate of 1 oz. of grain spawn per sq.ft, and a bed depth of 6".

In another experiment a range of casing materials, as alternatives to a mixture of peat and chalk, were tested when applied at several depths and at two intervals after spawning. Three frequencies and two rates of watering were superimposed on the above treatments.

A mixture of peat and chalk consistently gave the highest yields; the best results were obtained when applied at a depth of 2" at an early date after spawning. The effects of the different rates and frequencies of watering were inconsistent.
