Title: Mushrooms in Nineteen Days
Author: S.S. Block

Abstract:

In small scale experiments it was possible to produce mushrooms in 19 days from the start of composting. To shorten composting, the fresh compost material (corncob-hay) was inoculated with 1% compost which was at the height of its activity. The compost reached peak heat in 5 days and was used on the 6th day. It was cooled, spawned with 25% active mycelium, cased on the same day, and allowed to remain at 78°F for 2 days longer, after which it was kept at 65°F. The first mushrooms were picked 13 days after spawning The yield was 9.16 lbs per sq ft in 60 picking days and 11.4 lbs per sq.ft in 120 picking days. Holding the spawned compost for a longer period at 78°F, casing later, or using ordinary spawning, delayed fruiting.
