Abstract: In these experiments we have shown that compost can be ready for spawning one day after it reaches peak heat. Composting was performed in a special composting bin which provided uniform conditions of temperature, moisture, and aeration throughout the mass of the compost. Although the temperature of the compost at the time of sampling in some cases exceeded 170°F, the spawn ran well and there was no olive green mold. The yields on corncob-hay and sawdust composts were nil for samples taken prior to, or the day of peak heat, but were as good one day later as they were two or three days later.
