Abstract: The appearance of a highly infectious disease of the cultivated mushroom in the past two or three years has presented a serious problem to the American mushroom industry. Losses as high as seventy five percent of the crop have been sustained on a number of mushroom farms in several States, notably Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. This disease is very similar if not the same as the La France disease described by J.W. Sinden and E. Häuser (4) and the Watery Stipe disease which was described by D.G. Gandy ( 1 ) and co workers at the Glasshouse Crops Research Institute in 1955. No one has proven this disease to be identical with either of these, therefore a new name, "X-disease", was coined. Since the disease is infectious and not an environmental disorder and since no causal organism has been associated with the disease, a number of researchers have postulated that the disease may be caused by a virus or genetical disturbance. It is the purpose of this paper to report on infectivity studies carried out with "X-disease" at the Pennsylvania State University.
