Abstract: The main task of a research station is first of all to concentrate on solving problems without paying too much attention to the costs involved, at least at the beginning anyway. It is, however, at times useful, especially from a commercial grower's point of view to ascertain in detail whether a special treatment showing promising results is in fact profitable. The value of using an insecticide or a fungicide for example does not need much calculation. However, it takes some time before a grower is convinced of the commercial value of procedures requiring a comparatively large amount of manual labour and extra direct material cost. At the D.M.R.S. cropping yields are generally considerably higher than those obtained by the average grower. The reason for this is probably due to the extra care given and this care of course requires more labour. Quite a large number of growers—and always those who obtain comparatively low yields—often refuse to try out new developments. The reason for this is they believe that on a commercial scale the extra costs involved exceed the eventual extra yields obtained. A reaction like this is, of course, understandable.
