Abstract: It was considered that one source of variability in mushroom experiments could arise from the practice of hand-watering the casing layer. Watering is usually done at 2-3 day intervals, and is inevitably responsible for an alternate wetting and drying cycle. A system of watering has been developed which maintains the water content of the casing layer between narrow limits. Early trials show that the system is useful in studying the water relations of the casing layer, and has promise as a possible automatic method of watering commercial crops. This preliminary note describes the method and the results obtained to date.
