Abstract: Systematic knowledge of the effects of pesticides on mushrooms is scarce. Recent reports described insect control by incorporation of insecticides in compost (5) and casing layer (6). Knowledge of the effects of various chemicals on cultivated mushrooms would be of considerable theoretical and practical value. A practical example is the likelihood and consequences of pesticide (insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides) contamination of casing soil. Such contaminants undoubtedly could be present in soil recently taken from a field that had received heavy pesticide applications. This report presents the results of our first studies of the effects on mushrooms of common pesticides in casing soil.
