Title: Some Practical Aspects of Making Mushroom Spawn
Author: B.B. Stoller

Abstract:

It seems even experienced growers misunderstand the practice and procedure for making mushroom spawn. This report is an attempt to enlighten growers about such practice. A number of apparent improvements and elucidation of problems in spawn making, are also considered.

The aspects of spawn making covered in this report are:

1. Preventing the sticking together and adjusting the pH of grains. 2. Closures for aeration that prevent contamination and mite entry. 3. Inoculation procedure for maintaining sterile conditions. 4. Physiological distinction between brown and white strains. 5. Physiological and degenerative changes manifest by spawn. 6. Contamination and an apparent "disease" of spawn. 7. Continuous mycelial growth without interruption by cold storage (Active Mycelium).
