Abstract: Horse manure continues even today to be one of the most important basic compost materials of the Hungarian Mushroom Growing Undertaking. Experiments were and are conducted also with other basic materials; but among these rice-straw alone has proved to be suitable, up to the present, for largescale cropping. The Undertaking furnishes itself with the best quality horse-manure. The main sources are racing stables, stud farms, vaccine producing institutes etc., in which horses are fed on oats, kept on hay and bedded down abundantly with winter wheat- and rye-straw. The chemical composition of the manures coming from the various sources was analysed in 1958.
