Abstract: This paper furnishes a background of information for anyone who may be interested in "breeding" to improve cultivated mushrooms. Many observations are brought together and interpreted to illustrate the various facets of the cultural behavior of these fungi. A genetic hypothesis is suggested to explain this behavior. Finally, consideration is given to the procedures that have been used by various workers to create new cultures, evaluate these cultures, and maintain them. Methods of developing pure-culture spawn on a large scale are not discussed here since they are fully described elsewhere (5, 10, 20, 27, 55, 56).
