Abstract: In the last few years mushroom growers have become increasingly aware of the threat to their industry by the minute midge larvae known as "Cecids". Occasionally these are observed to swarm out of the beds in countless numbers. They crawl onto the mushrooms making them unpalatable and have frequently been blamed for unexpectedly low yields. Unlike other mushroom flies the adult midges are seldom seen, and even the larvae may never be noticed until swarming takes place. Few crops are raised without being infested by Cecids, yet remarkably little is known about these unusual insects.
