Title: A Note on Aphelenchoides Eelworms as Mushroom Pests
Authors: B.D. Moreton and M.E. John

Abstract:

Damage to mushroom mycelium by eelworms of a Ditylenchus sp. is now comparatively well known. In 1952 it was stated by Cairns (1) that species of Aphelenchoides may also feed upon mushroom hyphae. During the course of advisory work at Wye in the past two years we have frequently noticed Aphelenchoides sp. amongst the eelworms extracted from samples of compost from mushroom beds. The Aphelenchoides have commonly represented about 2-19% of eelworm populations which have varied from about, 28,000 to 800,000 per 250 cm3 compost (average sample weight 87 g), extracted over four days by the Baermann funnel technique. In 1955 samples were examined from two farms in Sussex and three in Kent, and eelworm populations of the order of 170,000-460,000 per 250 cm3 found, the great majority being Aphelenchoides sp. Mycelium had largely disappeared from the affected beds with much reduced cropping. Specimens of the eelworms were examined by Dr. J.B. Goodey who stated (2) that although they were similar in many respects to Aphelenchoides parietinus they differed morphologically from this species as recently re-described by Franklin (3).
