Abstract: THe mushroom growing industry is currently poorlly developed in Armenia. Around 1000-1200 tons of mainly Agaricus (Agaricus bisporis)and Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) mushrooms are produced each year. THe average mushroom production volume in Armenia comprises 6-10 kg/m2 which is significantly lower compared to the European countries. One of the main problems preventing the development of mushroom growth in Armenia is the absence of spawn production from more adapted to local environmental conditions, species/strains. Although the representative of Sylvan was established in Armenia 90% of mycelial spawn still continues to be imported. The prices of imported spawn are high and non-profitable for Armenian growers. Mother cultures also require special needds and growth conditions, and there are no modern technologies for utilization of the potential of high quality spawn of leading companies in Armenia. Presently, production of oyster mushrooms constitutes 10-15% of cultivable mushroom industry in Armenia. About 9 tons of spawn per year is required for the production of this fungus. Screening data of local Armenian strains of P. ostreatus on their morphological and genetic variability, growth parameters and fruiting productivity is reported.
