Abstract: On the one side the casing layer is in contact with the incubated compost and on the other it is exposed to the climatic conditions of the growing room. The quality of the casing layer has a huge influence on the success or failure of a crop. This first part of this paper covers the choice of casing materials, their preparation and the importance of certain characteristics of a casing layer. The cacing technique has been adopted worldwide, especially on more-modern farms. The use of casing inoculum versus compost-CAC will be discussed.
