Abstract: The mushroom cultivation industry is currently poorly developed in Armenia. One of the main obstacles preventing the development of mushroom cultivation is the absence of spawn production from species and strains more adapted to local environmental conditions. This paper discusses the screening data for three local Armenian strains of Pleurotus ostreatus for their morphological and genetic variability, growth parameters and fruiting productivity. Two of them [PO(SB)8 and PO(SB)21] are considered to have potential for local spawn production. Further introductions of new species and strains, including medicinal mushrooms, and organisation of local production of high-quality spawn and compost are required to assist further development of the mushroomgrowing industry in Armenia. The partnership between science and business, professional consulting and training of mushroom growers, as well as management and marketing of mushroom cultivation businesses, need to be further developed.
