Abstract: The objective of our study was to investigate the effect of Agaricus brasiliensis supplementation in the diet of cancer patients on natural killer (NK) cell counts. Seventy patients underwent A. brasiliensis supplementation (0.4 g orally, four times per day) and NK cell counts were taken at the beginning and end of the supplementation period (148±138 days). The majority of the cancer patients in the trial (75.7%) displayed a statistically significant (P<0.02) increase in NK cell count (mean=51%), whereas the remainder of the study patients showed an unchanged or decreased cell count. The highly aggressive therapy imposed on cancer patients typically results in a dramatic decrease in NK cells. Our data suggested that A. brasiliensis supplementation may improve the prognosis of cancer patients.
