Abstract: Prochloraz is an imidazole fungicide that acts against a wide range of fungal pathogens. In mushroom crops, it is widely used against Verticillium fungicola, but little is known about its fate once it is applied to the casing layer. In vitro and in situ experiments were done to determine the factors affecting the persistence and activity of prochloraz in mushroom casing. When prochloraz was applied to casing and incubated under laboratory conditions, it was relatively stable with half-life (DT50) values of >40 days. In contrast, the fungicide disappeared rapidly from the casing layer in large-scale cropping trials with a DT50 of 11-13 days. Agaricus bisporus did not have a significant effect on the fate of prochloraz.
