Abstract: Fungal competitors adversely affect the cultivation of shiitake (Lentinula edodes) on logs of Eucalyptus saligna. Research was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of natural and organo-synthetic products against these competitors. In vitro experiments using a mixture of sawdust, dextrose and agar were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of alcohol (90%), LonLife (0.15%, v/v) (a waste product of the citrus industry), bamboo pyrolyze extract (0.2%, v/v) and calcium hydroxide (0.4 kg/L) against Hypoxylon spp., Poria spp., Stemonites spp. and L. edodes. Logs of E. saligna were inoculated with three strains of L. edodes and sprayed every 15 days for six months with Benlate 50 WP (0.5 g/L), LonLife (0.15%, v/v), bamboo pyrolyze extract (0.2%, v/v) or calcium hydroxide (0.4 kg/L). In a similar experiment, E. saligna logs were inoculated with one strain of L. edodes and a cocktail of competitor fungi. The same treatments as before were used every 15 days for six months. In vitro, bamboo pyrolyze extract and LonLife controlled Poria and Stemonites, but not Hypoxylon. However, the dosages used inhibited the growth of L. edodes. Bamboo pyrolyze extract and calcium hydroxide reduced external contaminants on the Eucalyptus logs. The calcium hydroxide treatment significantly reduced productivity of L. edodes, while Benlate treatment significantly increased productivity.
