Abstract: Our purpose was to investigate the possibility of applying domestic nitrogen-containing soybean supplements to compost at spawning. We explored the influence of soybean extrudate (SE), soybean meal and protein soybean concentrate on yield of Agaricus bisporus in a bag growing system under commercial conditions. SE was the most effective in the trial and produced a slight increase in yield and amore extensive colonization of the compost. Temperature increases in the compost with supplements were linked to nitrogen content of the compost, but did not reduce yield. An indirect effect of increased temperature was a release of ammonia from the supplement, which was dependent on the type of supplement. In subsequent trials, the weight of the mushroom compost in bags was decreased to limit the increase in temperature. As a result of this investigation, a concentration of SE was determined that produced a statistically significant increase (37%) in yield. The yield increase was dependent on the concentration of supplement, with concentrations from 0.7-1% SE (compost wet wt.) produced the greatest response.
