Abstract: In a search of an adequate and flexible method to reduce the number of developing primordia of Agaricus bisporus, and thereby reducing the picking labor and increasing mushroom quality, the effect of sodium chloride applied to young primordia was studied. Sodium chloride was sprayed in a small volume of irrigation water onto the casing. Several doses and application timings were examined for an effect on pin number and yield. The method showed promise, with the overall efficacy being influenced by the salt dose, pin size at the time of application, and mushroom strain. Yet, the method produced highly variable responses, evidence that not all of the determining factors were understood and that further investigation was needed. The method, if perfected, may find application on farms with inadequate environmental control.
