Abstract: Species of the genus Agaricus and commercial strains of the species Agaricus bisporus were assessed for their ability to support mushroom pest development. Brown and smooth-white strains of A. bisporus were more susceptible to phorids (Megaselia halteratd) than the rough white and hybrid strains. A. bisporus was the most susceptible species producing over 400 times more phorids than the least susceptible (A. xanthoderma). There were wide variations in the generation time and emergence periods. In tests against sciarid larvae (Lycoriella ingenua (- L. mali)), one of the brown strains of A. bisporus was the most susceptible, producing 1.8 times as many flies than the least susceptible strain.
