Title: Inoculum adaptation changes the outcome of the competition between Lentinula edodes and Trichoderma spp. during shiitake cultivation on pasteurized wheat straw
Authors: J.-M. Savoie, R. Delpech, C. Billette and G. Mata

Abstract:

The competition between Trichoderma spp. and L. edodes occurs during the first days after spawning in pasteurized wheat straw. The initial rate of substrate colonization by antagonistic fungi and their ability to resist the attack and to inhibit other micro-organisms are important factors of the outcome of the interaction. A synthesis of available information on both the adaptation of L. edodes strains for the colonization and exploitation of wheat straw and their direct interaction with Trichoderma spp. is presented for introducing potential solutions improving the competitive abilities of L. edodes cultivated in pasteurized wheat straw. Substrate amendment with peat, selection of competitive strains and production of new spawn supports were investigated. They were defined for increasing the number of inoculum points per volume unit, increasing the vigor of the mycelium, inducing enzyme activities useful for utilizing the available nutritive resources in the substrate, and capturing the amendments before spawning.
