Abstract: A large collection of Verticillium fungicola var. fungicola and other pathogenic and non-pathogenic Verticillium species associated with mushroom growing has been assembled from world-wide sources. The relationships amongst this group have been determined using RFLP, RAPD and sequence analysis. Pathogen isolates representing each molecular group have been grown in liquid culmre using cell wall material extracted from Agaricus bisporus as a substrate. A range of enzymes have been identified and quantified. Wild type Agaricus species from the Agaricus Resource Program (ARP) were screened in mushroom house cropping trials for tolerance to Verticillium fungicola. Principal component analysis showed that enzyme production in Verticillium species could be partially correlated with the expression of specific symptoms.
