Title: Breeding studies on development of high yielding and quality hybrids of Agaricus bitorquis
Authors: M.C. Yadav, B.L. Dhar and R.N. Verma

Abstract:

The germplasm consisting of seven distinct strains of Agaricus bitorquis has been evaluated for yield, quality and natural incidence of false truffle, Diehhomyces microsporus, for selection of suitable parental lines Strams NCB-6 and NCB-15 were found superior yielders with 15 8 and 15 2 kg mushroom/100 kg compost, respectively in 10 weeks of cropping under seasonal growing conditions Strain NCB-2, a poor yielder with 6 5 kg mushroom/100kg compost, produced toughest and medium sized fruitbodies having small cream colored gills Average sporophore weight, pileus dia and pileus weight were significantly more in NCB-13 than NCB-2 and NCB-6 Average whiteness ranged from 67 5 in NCB-16 to 73 1 in NCB-14 Strain NCB-14 showed no false truffle infestation in the crop beds reflecting high degree of field tolerance/resistance Strains NCB-6 and NCB-15 exhibited tolerance agamst false truffle disease with good mushroom yields whereas NCB-13 was found to be a highly susceptible strain Some inter-strainal hybrids were obtained which are cunently under evaluation.
