Title: Breeding brown hybrids of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) from a factorial cross
Authors: A. Rodier, C. Devesse, T. Rousseau, R. Védie, M. Imbemon and J.M. Olivier

Abstract:

The discovery of a new life cycle of Agaricus bisporus and the demonsfration of its inheritance have allowed the development of controlled outcrossing. Thus, it could be infened that classical plant breeding strategies and quantitative genetics would be of great help to breed new strains of button mushroom. In order to exploit wild germplasm while investigating the potential interest of a plant breeding method, homokaryons of one of our hybrids were crossed with two homokaryotic testers according to a factorial cross plan. The present study investigated 40 hybrids together with commercial and parental strains in small scale trials at our facilities. Statistical and genetic analyses were performed according to two linear models. Information about the genetic control of brown color of cap, yield, number and mean weight of mushrooms in this cross are discussed. A few improved hybrids were identified in order to be assessed in large scale trials.
