Title: Medicinally important fungi

Abstract:

The large mushroom-type fungi have been used as food and for medicinal purposes for a very long history Higher fungi have become increasingly popular today, and are widely used as traditional medicinal materials m China, Japan and Korea There are more than 270 species of mushrooms, which are known to have certain therapeutic properties Modem research on medicinal mushrooms focuses mamly on the study of their biologically active components with specific pharmacological properties, particularly anti-cancer activity In the seventies and eighties, three antitumor agents of polysaccharide nature were isolated and developed from Lentinus edodes, Schizophyllum commune and Conolus versicolor respectively and have become large market items Besides, there are other potentially important therapeutic properties of higher fungi such as antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, cholesterol lowering, liver protective, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antiviral, and antimicrobial activities New potent therapeutic agents derived from the rich source of fungi deserve further exploration and development.
