Abstract: The results of breeding Agaricus bisporus over the past decades have been meager. After the release of the first hybrids in 1980 no release of truly new strains has occurred. Nevertheless, much progress has been made to meet all the prerequisites to generate new strains such as the knowledge of the life cycle, the availability of sources of genetic variation and efficient tools for breeding. This review will discuss progress on these prerequisites with the emphasis on new developments.
