Abstract: The availability of selection systems for developing genetic modification tools for basidiomycetous fungi is still a limiting factor. This chapter presents an overview of several different antibiotics which have been tested, and sometimes successfully employed, in different species of filamentous fungi. It is clear that no generally applicable selection systems is available for basidiomycetes, but a rather large number of possible substances is available which can be tested. Nevertheless, the availability of auxotrophic mutants which can be complemented with their wild-type genes, is very desirable and, if available, should be the preferred choice.
