Abstract: Commercially grown strains of the white button mushroom Agaricus bisporus are highly susceptible to Verticillium fungicola var. fungicola. In a collection of 100 wildtype isolates of A. bisporus we have detected several strains that were partially resistant to V. fungicola but absolute resistance was not observed. Histological study of the infection process in one of the partially resistant strains gave some evidence on the nature of the resistance. Necrosis of the outer part of the tissue and deposition of brown pigments, possibly toxic melanins, in the underneath layers were demonstrated in the selected partially resistant strain. The number of damaged or collapsed A. bisporus cells was reduced, although inter- and intrahyphal growth of V. fungicola was also observed.
