Abstract: A series of cropping trials were conducted between 1987 and 1994 on cultures of 4 hybrid white (U3-derived) and 8 hybrid off-white (Ul-derived) strains maintained in a vegetative state at the Penn State Mushroom Spawn Laboratory. Performance of hybrid off-white strains was more consistent than the performance of hybrid white strains. Both groups of cultures reflected a decrease in production efficiency, followed by a recovery. The cause of this vacillation in production efficiency was associated with a time period when the master cultures were moved repeatedly during rebuilding and extensive renovations. The recovery data demonstrate that vegetatively propagated cultures are capable of recovery when they are in a consistent environment.
