Abstract: Siteroptes mesembrinae (Canestrini), red pepper mites preferred host is Trichoderma sp. but they can also sustain field populations on Chaetomium sp., Oedocephalum sp., Rhizopus sp. and Fusarium sp. They have been found to possess a pair of specialised spore-carrying structures (sporothecae) in which they transport the spores of Trichoderma and possibly other weed moulds, to environments which are favourably for spore germination and hyphal survival. Other species from this genus, which possess sporothecae, are vectors of plant fungal diseases. The relationship between S. mesembrinae and Trichoderma/weed moulds is examined and the implications for the mushroom industry discussed in the light of the new findings.
