Title: Homokaryotic fruiting in Agaricus bitorquis: A new approach
Authors: D. Martinez-Carrera, M.P.Challen, J.F. Smith, T.J. Elliott and C.F.Thurston

Abstract:

External and internal factors are known to influence homokaryotic fruiting (HF) in higher Basidiomycetes In Agancus bitorquis, two types of HF have been identified 1 Mitotic homokaryotic fruiting (MHF), governed basically by fruiting genes, and 2 Recombinant homokaryotic fruiting (RHF), regulated by the mating-type (MT) factor In MHF, comparative classical and molecular analyses indicated that the phenotype and genotype of the progeny are identical to the parental homokaryon Pedigree analysis, supported by parentage analysis using RAPD markers, has revealed an intriguing mechanism by which homokaryons following the RHF pathway segregate parental and non-parental MTs m a l 1 ratio within the progeny in clearly defined patterns One homokaryon is potentially capable of segregating at least two non-parental MTs through RHF in two successive generations The possible biological significance of this phenomenon, involving the programmed expression of silent mating-type genes, is presented within a revised model for the life cycle of this species
