Year 1995
Title: The effect of increasing the quantity of gypsum on mushroom yield and quality
Authors: D.M. Beyer and R.B. Beelman

Abstract:

Studies were conducted to determine the effect of increasing the quantity of gypsum added during Phase I composting on the yield and quality of Agaricus bisporus mushrooms. Gypsum added at a recommended quantity and at three times that rate to compost in four different crops grown at the Mushroom Test Demonstration Facility showed that yield, fresh and postharvest quality were not significantly different. Calcium content of the mushrooms was not increased by the addition of more gypsum in the compost substrate. Compost substrate was analyzed for nitrogen, pH, ash and moisture, and the differences are discussed.
