Title: Perforated plastic film coverage of the casing soil to improve fructification and crop management
Author: R. Vedie

Abstract:

For improving fructification in caves without a sophisticated control of climatic conditions and specially the CO2 level, we have experimented on the use of a polyethylene film coverage on the casing soil during the first week after casing.

The coverage permits us to concentrate C02 in the small volume between the casing layer and the polyethylene film and to keep a good moisture level in the casing soil.

The effect on production result is a better total yield. In particular, we noted a larger first flush and with a production concentrated in time, a shorter first flush.

In a cave, where climatic conditions are difficult to control and vary from one unit to another, application of a perforated plastic film on the casing soil results, in constant period of time between casing and the beginning of picking. This permits a better organisation of labour in caves.
