Volume 14 Part 1 Article 40
Year 1995
Title: Agaricus bisporus (Lge.) Imb. casing layer III: Casing from inert material
Authors: Ralph H. Kurtzman, Jr

Abstract:

The characteristics of the ideal casing and the function of casing have long been debated. The most commonly used casing material, peat moss, is so complex that any attempt to sort out its function seems hopeless. An essentially inert casing material is described. That material supported mushroom yields that were approximately equal to the yield supported by peat moss casing. Fargo silty clay, an extremely rich soil, previously shown to make a poor casing, can be improved by sifting after limestone has been added.
