Abstract: The use of DTG for determining fibre and lignin components present in three pasteurised composts was assessed. Results obtained have shown that total fibre estimations by DTG gave higher results than those determined by chemical methods. This may be due to microbial biomass and other compounds lost during chemical separation. Characteristic changes in the thermogram at three heating rates, 5, 20 and 50°C were identified. Analysis at a high heating rate displaced the DTG curve towards higher temperature. At lower rates the effects is the opposite. Isothermal analysis of the lignin-humus complex showed that the weight loss curve was different in potentially high yielding compost.
